Shelf-life: Like most seeds, green coffee beans are long-life. They can be easily stored for up to 36 months.

Storage: Similar to roasted coffee, the green coffee should be kept away from light and other odours (light and aroma protected). A cool, neither too wet nor too dry storage is recommended.

 

Roasted coffee beans

Shelf-life: Roasted coffee beans which are packaged in a bag with the so called one-way breathing valve can be stored for up to 18 months. The aroma valve protects the beans against harmful oxygen and humidity and lets carbon dioxide, which the coffee gives off in the first few days after roasting, escape. Under ideal storage conditions opened packages of coffee beans or beans which have been roasted at home can definitely be kept 6 to 8 weeks without noticeable loss of aroma.

Storage: Roasted coffee beans lose flavour much faster than green beans. It is therefore crucial that they are stored in a dry environment, protected from light and other odours. It is optimal to put the beans along with the packaging in an airtight ceramic or tin can and store them at a temperature between 10 and 18 degrees Celsius. Optionally, the well-sealed package may be placed in the freezer (dry cold), provided that the storage is planned for a longer period. If you drink your coffee often, you should not store it too cold because the constantly changing temperatures reduce its quality.

 

Ground coffee / coffee powder

Shelf-life: Ground coffee is a relatively sensitive fresh product. It is therefore packaged airtight and can be kept unopened for up to 18 months. However, opened packages should be used up quickly. Without proper storage the coffee powder loses a lot of valuable flavours already after one week. Storage in a freezer delays this unwanted aging process by a whole month.

Storage: Ground coffee should be stored similar to roasted coffee beans – closed absolutely airtight and protected from light. Opened packages should be kept sealed and stored in a ceramic or metal can. If oxygen comes into contact with the coffee powder the oxidation process begins, which destroys the roast aromas. One should never fill the coffee powder directly into a can or other container. During refilling many valuable flavours get lost and coffee oils settle at the edges of the can. The oils become rancid with time, which considerably reduces the enjoyment of coffee.

Also humidity can cause great damage to the coffee powder. Apart from aroma loss, mould may appear. For this reason storing coffee powder in the refrigerator, where high humidity prevails, is not recommended. It is best to store it either in the freezer (long-term, dry cold) or in a dry place at a temperature between 10 and 18 degrees Celsius.

 

Recommendation: You will get the best coffee aroma if you grind the roasted beans just before brewing coffee and serve the coffee immediately after - without using any hotplates or containers.
